Why we're Green
Santa Monica Family YMCA is committed to energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. They replaced hundreds of fluorescent tubes with LEDs and added window tint to large south facing windows to reduce heat gain. To improve indoor air quality they eliminated aerosols and switched to Green Seal Certified cleaners. The YMCA cut paper use by 50% by using flyers with QR codes and installed water refilling stations to reduce single use plastics. Their recycling program uses color coded liners with clear blue for recycling and black for trash to simplify waste sorting. They also source janitorial paper products with minimum post consumer recycled content. Beyond facility upgrades sustainability education is part of their children’s day camp promoting community wide environmental awareness and action.
