Since 2007, more than half of the world’s population has lived in cities: that number is projected to rise by 60% by 2030. To meet this demand, global construction output is projected to grow by 2.5 trillion sq feet by 2060. (That would be like adding a city the size of NY each month for 40 years). At the same time, concerns about climate change and diminishing natural resources place increased pressure on the construction industry to build green and reduce environmental impact. By conservative estimates, the construction industry is responsible for 30% of the world’s natural resource extraction and 25% of the solid waste generated. (This climbs to 50% when sand and aggregates are used on building sites).
