Why we're Green
In 2006 the chamber hosted Lafayette's first Earth Day Festival and a city wide light bulb exchange with PG&E. The following year, the chamber formed the GREEN Committee. We developed a program where businesses could self evaluate their "green" practices, take a survey and become a Lafayette Green Business. This accomplished two goals. 1) get businesses to begin moving towards new "green" goals which could lead to becoming a Bay Area Green Business and 2) recognize the businesses that were changing their operations to become more sustainable. We have had over 50 businesses at any one time that have become Lafayette Green Businesses. The Chamber became a Bay Area Green Business shortly after this began. Along with the city's Environmental Task Force and Sustainable Lafayette, we have led the charge on business recycling, now with less than 5 business not recycling.
